Underground to return to Leeds as Academy announces second venue

The Academy Music Group has today announced plans for a second venue in Leeds, situated directly below the main Academy.

An integral part of AMG's £4,500,000 project, the venue (named 'Underground' - as it was known back in the late 1990s before it closed in 2000) is a new 400-capacity space that will open its doors from mid-October.

Initially positioned as a pre and post bar for Leeds Academy gigs, the Underground will also function as an additional area for club events in the main room.

Underground will boast two bars, seated areas and multiple screens to relay the live show from Leeds Academy.

The launch event at Leeds Academy will be Kaiser Chiefs (supported by Late Of The Pier and Leeds band The Hair) on Wednesday 8th October. Tickets for Academy events can be purchased from See Tickets.

Although not mentioned in the announcement, it will be interesting to see if the new 400-capacity venue will promote its own live bands / gigs in the future. Like an 'Academy 2'...
