The two bands that make up this 12" vinyl split single on Nottingham based imprint Field Records have already built quite a cult following throughout the year. 2008 has seen Leicester based outfit Maybeshewill release their well-received debut album Not For The Want Of Trying and Leicester/Leeds band Her Name Is Calla released mini-album The Heritage to similar great acclaim.
Falling somewhere between Slint and Explosions In The Sky, Maybeshewill make a double contribution. Kicking things off with the unbelievably good 'This Time Last Year', this brutal instrumental features crashing drums, a vigorous combination of heavily distorted and scintillating guitar, glitch electronica, glockenspiel, spoken word sample and a dreamy synthetic arrangement. The bands second offering, 'Last Time This Year' is just as appealing. Consisting of huge walls of noise generated by a sea of guitars, rolling drums and a probing piano/keyboard arrangement, this track is epic in every sense of the word.
Having featured on a self-released EP last year, fans of Leicester/Leeds band Her Name Is Calla should be no stranger to the 17-minute colossus 'Condor And River'. Those unfamiliar with the title ought to get acquainted immediately. This is a quite astonishing piece of music. Shifting in tempo with shimmering guitars, drums resonating piano, wailing trombone and a burning vocal that leads to the mind blowing finale, this is one track that will leave fans of A Silver Mt. Zion and Godspeed You! Black Emperor in awe.
Ultimately, this amazing release reaffirms why Maybeshewill and Her Name Is Calla are two of Britain's most promising bands. Absolutely essential.
