By Shirley Lee
'The Smack Of Pavement In Your Face' is taken from Spearmint frontman, Shirley Lee's new self-titled debut album. The title is misleading as it does not represent the theme and style of the song, and that's the beauty of it.
The single is a fabulous love song that is unbelievably catchy. It has a great country feel that builds up from a straight strum and vocal first verse. The lyrics are great. For example: "when was the last time you slept so long that you woke up feeling clean and totally renewed." He also asks about the last time you "laughed till your lungs burst out of your chest" and "been in a coma, felt happily enough. Then your heart started beating and your senses started functioning you suddenly woke up". He then explains in the chorus "that's how I feel now I've met you". Fabulous.
It's refreshing to hear that a theme which is so often cheesy or somber can be used to create such a bubbly song whilst avoiding cliches.
