By Lisa Hannigan
Lisa Hannigan is a name you might not know, granted, but a name that you will soon know, fall in love with and want to know everything about.
Recently picking up Hot Press awards for Best Female, Best Debut Album, Best Irish Album and Best Irish track, she has also been nominated for Best Irish Album at the Meteor Music Awards and the Choice Music Prize in Ireland. That's a lot of industry action since leaving her long term playing in Damien Rice's band.
Whilst she was in that band she attracted a lot of her own attention and after Rice's albums 'O' and '9,' said collaboration ended and she was left with a notebook of songs and a confidence to get them out there into the world.
This ten track album is beautiful. You can clearly feel the passion in her lyrics, her subject matter and love of life. It makes you wonder why she stayed with Rice that long; she has so much more to give than being a backing singer. She has though, learned a lot from that experience and I suppose it developed her into what we love now. After countless references to the oceans of this world and her mother hand-stitching the album artwork, we are given Sea Sew. She has also made four of the album tracks available via her website pre-album release, get involved!
Described as 'Exquisitely ethereal,' 'Stunning,' 'Mesmerising' and 'A beaming presence' Lisa Hannigan is certainly destined for big things this year. Rice's next outing will most definitely be an ordinary one without her. His loss, our gain, and what a gain!
