As a precursor to their debut mini-album, Watford's None The Less release their first single 'Define' as a free download, and pretty much the only negative thing I can say about it is that no metal/hardcore mash-up should ever end in a fade down.

Beyond that, 'Define' is a furious statement of intent that takes the Fightstar route of blending accessible, clean vocals with flesh-peeling hardcore snarls. The clean vocals dominate the verses and choruses, but the breakdown section is completely given over to the hardcore side of None The Less's vocals, and it sounds suitably terrifying.

The verses of chuggy guitar lines and possessed-sounding, relentless drumming, drives the listener into a chorus where frontman Ant Giannaccini's soaring, clean-cut vocals promptly blow 'Define' wide open.

It's here where None The Less begin to sound bigger than other hardcore-influenced acts, and hint at a more epic, cinematic side to their sound. This suspicion is confirmed by a brief mid-song interlude, where None The Less construct an urban soundscape of wailing sirens and dreamily vague vocals. This Watford five-piece clearly aspire to greater things than just busting a few eardrums.

Furious drumming, walls of grinding riffs and a perfect balance between clean vocals and hardcore support vocals, None The Less are a better than average hardcore-metal outfit, with epic flourishes. Accessible hardcore with that extra bit of drama.
