Lisa Hannigan

By Joseph C Seager

LMS caught up with Lisa Hannigan, Dublin's new superstar!

Hello Lisa Hannigan. Where are you currently?

Hello there. I'm at home in Dublin enjoying the sunshine.

How's 2009 going thus far?

Very well thank you. I've been writing and touring and generally making myself useful.

Are you pleased with your album 'Sea Sew'?

Yes. That's why I released it!

Are you releasing any singles from the album?

I'm not sure. I've made videos for 'Lille' and 'I don't know' so hopefully one of them.

I love the artwork for the album. How did that come about?

I had it planned for a good while. I took a month to stitch the lyrics. A lovely relaxing month of listening to records and watching movies while only worrying about the occasional puncture wound.

What's your favourite track from 'Sea Sew'?

If I had to pick one it would be 'Lille'.

If people don't know what you and your music are about, how would you describe yourself?

I have a friend who describes my music as "plinky plonk rock". I suppose that's as good a description as any!

How did you come to music for those who don't know?

My earliest memory is singing along to my mam's Joni Mitchell tapes in the back of the car, doing all the backing vocal bits.

Who would you love to perform with, past or present?

I'm quite happy to be doing my own thing for now.

What are you currently listening to on your MP3 player?

I'm enjoying Bat For Lashes new record and Fever Ray's solo debut.

Best venue you've played?

There's lots of Irish venues that I love such as de barras in Clonakilty and the spirit store in Dundalk. I was lucky enough to play in the Ryman in Nashville too and that will stay with me for a long while.

Where do you find your influences?

I try not to listen to much while I'm writing as I'd rather any influences were unconscious really.

What do you miss the most when you're on the road touring?

Apart from friends and family, I miss being able to cook my own food.

Some quick fire questions: Tea or coffee?

Tea.

Summer or winter?

Summer.

Superman or Batman?

Aaargh! Batman.

Possibly the most important question now, Reading or Leeds?

I don't have much experience of either and don't want to incur any unnecessary wrath so I'll say nothing!

And finally, what's next on the agenda for Lisa Hannigan?

A week at home and then a UK tour with Jape.

Thanks for your time Lisa, and good luck with the album!
