By Dinosaur Jr
'Pieces' is the second single to be lifted off Dinosaur Jr's ninth studio album, 'Farm.'
'Pieces' is the typical Dinosaur Jr wall of distorted guitars and frontman J Mascis's vague and winding 'slacker' drawl, cut through with sharper guitar lines that hit those glimmering high notes and give 'Pieces' a sparkling veneer. Mixed in with this are passages of chuggy guitars and a screeching solo that gives 'Pieces' that 70s, alt-rock edge to counter the fuzzy, alt-pop guitars and dreamy vocals.
'Pieces' is heady, blurry rock with extensive use of feedback and distortion, and the occasional flicker of sharpened guitars. It's another slice of the distinctive Dinosaur Jr sound, and those hoping for some sort of progression will be disappointed, although existing fans will lap this one up.
