This single is as good as music can get without being interesting in any way. It chugs along. It wigs out intermittently with some tasty enough guitar licks. It repeats a nicely harmonised refrain. It riffs away into a fade and is gone. The disappointment is that it leaves not a trace of noteworthy recollection in its wake.
The constituent elements of the record suggest that, rearranged and refocused, the talents of the musicians behind it could turn out a decent tune. 'Turning Up,' sadly for them (and by extension the listener), is not that tune. Indie guitars have given us some great tunes down the years, but the morass of the genre can feel stodgy and uninspiring when individual tracks have nothing to distinguish them from the crowd. Mirrorkicks may require further inspiration to thus exalt them.
