The Backseat

By The Gaslight Anthem

Fresh from being crowned 'Best International Newcomer' at the Kerrang! Awards, The Gaslight Anthem are back with another slice of yearning, soul-infused punk rock. While not as wrenching as previous singles 'The '59 Sound' and 'Great Expectations,' frontman Brian Fallon has the sort of voice that effortlessly conjures up a sense of nostalgia, meaning that 'The Backseat' feels like a song you've heard somewhere before.

Fallon's aching vocals are underpinned by a relentless, marching drumbeat and a staccato guitar line that trembles away in the background during the verses, and rises dramatically to the forefront during the choruses.

Not the strongest song off The Gaslight Anthem's second studio album, 'The Backseat' is nevertheless guaranteed to give your heartstrings a fair old workout, simply because Fallon has one of those voices that could make any song a winner.

Nice review. I love this tune, probably my favourite from The '59 Sound. It's a nice closer to the album, reminds me a bit of "A Murder Of One" from August and Everything After beacuse it's such a big, sweeping, brooding finale.
