By Los Campesinos!
'Romance Is Boring' is the third album (2008's 'We Are Beautiful, We Are Doomed' has ten tracks on it, that's an album, I don't care what the band say) from Cardiff's favourite (no longer) quirky indie-pop band. As per the trend of 2009, it sees the band leave their indie pop roots behind in favour of a new (and we'll get this point out of the way now,) all around far better sound. Opener 'In Medias Res' (translating as 'Into Mid-Affairs') is the perfect example of this, and of frontman Gareth's talent as a lyricist, setting out the context of the album as focusing on youth.
'Romance Is Boring' definitely contains low points. The chorus of the title track is a little too like their old style, and seems out of place within the rest of the album, and the female-vocal led 'We've Got Your Back (Documented Minor Emotional Breakdown #2)' (#1 is on 'We Are Beautiful...') sounds too much like something Fight Like Apes have been to and done (and far better, it must be said).
However, when it's good, it's brilliant. 'I Just Sighed, I Just Sighed, Just So You Know' and 'Straight In At 101' are great, as is 'This Is A Flag. There Is No Wind,' and it's opening shout of "can everybody please just calm the fuck down!?" None of these tracks compare to 'The Sea Is A Good Place To Think Of The Future,' a glorious epic of spoken word, stunning string parts and sublime crashing guitars and drums. Truly, it's out-of-this-worldly good, and it outlines perfectly just how far this lesser known indie-pop band from Wales really has come with their third album.
