Liverpool lads Sound Of Guns get the tricky balancing act of anthemic rock spot on with their new single 'Alcatraz.' A crisp veneer of rushing guitars, glimmery chords and arcing vocals put a stadium rock sheen on a base of roughened guitars. It's this grittier undertone that prevents Sound Of Guns from sounding like Nickelback. And Sound Of Guns continue to put their own mark on one of the most radio-ready of genres, with a burst of snappy call-and-response gang vocals.

Thankfully, it isn't a one-off; B-side 'Knots' plays out like your regular foot-stamping arena-pleaser complete with shamelessly hooky vocal lines that'll reel you into 'Knots's glossy world. This arena-rock-by-numbers base is topped off with an ingenious bit of slide-guitar, which grinds relentlessly across the track, sounding like a cross between a blunt razor and a siren. It's one of those rare riffs that sounds quite unlike anything you've heard before. A B-side of encouraging quality.

Sound Of Guns take the stadium rock formula and make it their own. A mainstream-friendly single, with refreshing quirkiness and character.
