Orka

Live at The Wardrobe on Wednesday, 11th June 2003

Entering the cool downstairs bar of The Wardrobe I'm greeted by a sea of the city's most beautiful inhabitants. This is a gig to be seen at; apparently that applies to A&R men too. A small crowd gathers in front of the stage, no Bermuda crescent here, even kids as cool as these ones aren't afraid to get right down the front. There's actually no need as the venue isn't as busy as one would imagine.

Orka look good on a stage, they're all attractive young men and have a good presence about them. Coyle Girelli is a competent frontman, really giving it everything when he loses his guitar and hangs off the mic stand. Musically it's very tight but alas instantly forgettable. Sounding not dissimilar to Remy Zero the band just don't quite have the standard of songs to match their musical ability and quality as a unit. "She" is the most memorable track but the early promise of the verse is let down by the catchy yet lyrically weak chorus. Powered along by an energetic drummer Orka have plenty of class and style but need to find some truly ball grabbing numbers to elevate them to the elite.

I disagree with your comment 'instantly forgettable. don't quite have the standard of songs to match their musical ability and quality as a unit.' I think 'She' is fantastic!! as is 'Your Vegas' I imagine my opinion is shared by others... maybe not?
