By Josť James
Josť James returns with a second album, 'Black Magic,' which echoes the work of the likes of Marvin Gaye, John Coltrane and Billie Holiday.
'Black Magic' is certainly an album that would not be out of place in the 'easy listening' pigeonhole; it swirls through silky vocals and delicate piano to cool bass lines and sympathetic percussion. Jordana de Lovely's voice on 'Love Conversation' is a pleasant surprise and provides a refreshing break from James' voice, though this is not to suggest in any way that a break is needed. In 'Black Magic,' Jose James has managed to showcase his ability to create a cool fusion of hip hop, funk and jazz on this mature and soulful album.
