Milf

Live at Cockpit on Tuesday, 15th July 2003

I've got to admit, I've been avoiding this band like the plague. Its nothing personal, but a name like Milf just conjures up images of a bad Blink 182 rip off act with 'hilarious' fart into a microphone japery. With this closed mindedness, I was pleasantly surprised. Milf don't sound like Blink 182, they don't do on stage comedy routines. They are in fact a serious band with some seriously good songs.

With interest from Sony this band is destined for big things, and a set at the Leeds festival could well be the kind of foothold this band need to get into the upper echelons of the music business.

The first thing I noticed about the live sound was the quality of the drumming. Too often a band has a drummer, who happens to own a drum kit and can keep a beat. And that's all. However, the drummer takes the drums from background rhythm to forefront instrument.

Songs are short and sweet, taking on a Muse at their heaviest vibe. The sound is rocky and effects driven, but not so much so that the quality of the lyrics is lost in a wall of sound.

All in all, the Milf I expected and the Milf I saw are as far apart as butter and ice cream, and the mature sound is carried well by a good looking band with good stage presence.

Milf. Shit name, great band.
