Vanity Kills
By Codeine Velvet Club
'Vanity Kills' is a re-release of the first song Codeine Velvet Club (aka Jon Lawler of The Fratellis, and singer-songwriter Lou Hickey) ever wrote together, but it struts with all the confidence of a band who have been together a lifetime.
'Vanity Kills' is a slow, winding, jazzed-up boy-girl duet with all the theatrical sass of a showtune, and all the gloomy atmosphere of a film noir. A measured stomp of jangly drums and lazy horns beg for some serious jazz-hands action, while the subtle echo of the vocals plays perfectly into 'Vanity Kills' unique atmosphere. The lyrical content may be a little flat and unimaginative, and fails to capitalise on 'Vanity Kills' film noir leanings but, besides that, it's very hard to pick fault with this song. Dark, bombastic and surprisingly catchy - one for those with a penchant for something different.
