By Musée Mécanique
The second UK single from Portland quintet Musée Mécanique seizes your undivided attention with an arresting opening. In throwing together the disparate elements of droning organs and painfully hesitant vocals, they create something really special. Each tentative word and vocal tremble is starkly visible against that flat, dull backdrop of organs. It makes for absorbing listening.
Then, it all goes a bit wrong. While it's undeniable that Musée Mécanique had to take 'Sleeping In Our Clothes' in a different direction following the intro (an entire song of droning organ would be impossible to listen to, after all) this song sheds all the emotional intensity of the opening moments, in a jumble of sound. The folky rattle of tambourines and acoustic guitars, completely swamp frontman Micah Rabwin's vocals, making them just another layer of sound, amongst many.
A starkly strong opening half, but a second half that loses its way.
