By Dead Confederate
Athens' quartet Dead Confederate follow up on 'The Rat' with second single 'Start Me Laughing,' and it's a deceptively upbeat song.
The riffs stretch and snap back elastically, frequently soaring to a noisy, riotous jangle, while frontman Hardy Morris makes garbled vocal outbursts that bring a nervy energy to proceedings. But, Dead Confederate's power lies in their relative subtlety. This song is as dark and claustrophobic as doom-metal, but executed with a stealthy, softer touch that's all the more deadly. 'Start Me Laughing,' beneath its bounding drumbeats and snappy riffs, has a gravitational pull: expect to be sucked into the doom and gloom that lies beneath its lively surface. As grim as the rest of 'Wrecking Ball,' but with added allure.
