By Willy Mason
It's been some time since Willy Mason's last offering, but here we have it in the form of 5 beautifully crafted songs. The pace is slow, so don't go expecting any thumping but subdued drum beats, although Willy's brother Sam is again on drums, as are the rest of his friends / band; Nina Violet on Vocals, Matthew Cullen on guitar and Colin Ruel doing a fine job on the artwork.
Listening to the CD I have bought not all the songs appear to be in order, but if in doubt the titles are in the chorus anyway. 'Restless Fugitive' sounds like something Seasick Steve would play with its windy country theme. 'So Long Baby Shoes' with Nina's great backing vocals has the statement "So Long Baby Shoes, Hello To The Blues". Classic lyrics from someone so young. 'Carry On' is self explanatory, about keeping going, a reoccurring theme in many of Willy's songs. 'Looking For The Door' is a short sad song about loneliness after being let down. 'I Wish I Knew You To Say Goodbye' is a classic traditional song about trying to let someone know how you feel. I believe the track listing is not what shows up on itunes or the CD cover but 'Restless Fugitive', 'So Long Baby Shoes', 'Carry On', 'Looking For The Door' and 'I Wish I Knew You To Say Goodbye'. A little detective work is good for the mind... maybe one day this CD version will be rare!
The CD is a compilation of recordings made in various places (living rooms, workshops etc) between 2007 and 2010 and later remastered. The stripped back tunes are evident of Willy and company's way of working, getting it back to basics and back to the people, traditional folk at its best. I just hope it's not as long until the next set of songs.
