Stompy pop-rock is the name of Anberlin's game. 'We Owe This To Ourselves' is a well-balanced trade-off between accessibility and edge, with buzzsaw riffs growling away in the background, and a heavily-looped snippet of springy chord-work in the foreground. Those kooky chords are looped a little too aggressively, and do begin to irritate before this song is through - it's a great hook, but not great enough to warrant a repeat every five seconds.
Anberlin's strongest asset is frontman Stephen Christian's voice. The chorus may work itself into a comfortable rut where the song's title is being repeated over and over again, but that ceases to matter when Stephen Christian is singing that title with such desperation that he puts an entirely unexpected, intense spin on Anberlin's dance-friendly pop-rock. Anberlin take the done-to-death formula of big-chorused, accessible rock, and do something wonderful with it.
