Me And The Moon

By The Drums

Do you read Calvin and Hobbes? Of course you do. Everybody does. Do you think it is a comic about a boy with a magic stuffed tiger that comes alive, or a comic about a mentally ill child? This is the salient point in Calvin and Hobbes, we all know. Anyway, whichever side of the magic/schizophrenia divide you fall on as regards Calvin and Hobbes, if you also spent your childhood wishing life could be like it was on The Wonder Years and you could live in the mythical sunny blonde haired U.S of A that all these lazy cultural signifiers bring to mind, then this is probably the single for you. Like all their records, 'Me and the Moon' sounds like The Drums are soundtracking a John Hughes directed teen beach party 80's porn film in which Molly Ringwald gets gang raped by aliens from outer space. As an Englishman I feel it my duty to point out that it should more correctly be titled 'The Moon and I', but it is very good nonetheless. 'Down By The Water' is the stand out BIG BALLAD type song from their poptastic self titled debut album, and it sounds like a 1970's era Beach Boys record if The Beach Boys had been pretty boy model hipster scum with stupid jumpers and everything.

Honestly we have all heard them by now and we all know what we think-this is like the nine millionth single from the album- but I suspect that beneath the goofy, 50's drive in movie poster plasticity of their cheerfully cheesy pop perfection lies a wonderfully talented band with more in the tank than anyone would guess. For now they are very fun while still being emotionally affecting and this gets 8/10.

So Jacob the guitarist out of the drums, would you go on the telly and advertise butter like that butter selling prick Johnny Rotten?

Jacob Graham: I don't think I would advertise butter, maybe strawberry jam. It's probably one of those strange desperate things that you could never really say for sure until you were actually in the situation. Like taking a bullet for a friend. But besides all that I don't really like the idea of being on television in general.

What song was playing when you had you first kiss?

Jacob Graham: I don't think there was any song playing when I had my first kiss, just the sound of crickets. I do remember a certain kiss some time later that felt like a first kiss, there was a song playing but I don't remember what it was and I'm sure it wasn't any good. I try to keep my regrets to a minimum, I've never been good at it.

If you had one magical punch that could knock out anyone in the world, who would you punch?

Jacob Graham: I don't know that I would punch anyone if I could. I spent my teenage years so full of hate that now I do everything I can to abstain from violence.

Good read that. Most entertaining. i spent my teenage years so full of booze that I don't think I could punch anyone, even if I should, so I know how he feels.
