Pendulum release a heavily shortened version of 'The Island' from their current 'Immersion' effort. This track sees them dilute drum and bass with some of the euphoria of house, a hefty dose of pop in the form of a shamelessly sing-along chorus, and the cinematic, concept-like flourish that characterises the album. Guaranteed to annoy the drum and bass purists, this mongrel of a song still packs plenty of twisted, sawing synths and a pounding beat. The CD comes complete with a DJ edit of 'The Island Pt. II Dusk,' which has that irritating slipping-disc sound effect slapped all over it, and is the sort of remix that'll have you going back to the original.
'The Island' is a song to divide existing fans. This is a million miles away from the 'Hold Your Colour' album and is pure, dance-music cheese compared to 'Blood Sugar' but, even though this song may have some Pendulum fans doing a double-take, it's still a euphoria-inducing trip around the dance sub-genres.
