Ane Brun is an artist first introduced to me by Mark Olson of The Jayhawks who suggested I check out this Norwegian singer's past work and I fell for her stunning 'A Temporary Dive' album, so how does the new record 'It All Starts With One' shape up to her previous work?
Ane Brun has one of the most distinctive voices and approaches to music, creating an almost avant-garde soundscape, cutting through its many layers with a voice of incredible emotion and expression. 'It All Starts With One' seems to be underpinned orchestrally by deep percussion, creating tempestuous seas over which Brun expresses her deepest inner thoughts accompanied by texturally light keyboards that creates a sound with enough space to navigate the intensity produced.
Highlight track on the album has to be single release 'Do You Remember' which is a quirky avant-pop song that sounds like a 50's pop song but at the same time confuses this notion with a drum part driving the piece through something that feels a little disturbing, something the video focuses on in most unusual fashion.
Also worth a mention on this album is the collaboration with Swedish folkie Jose Gonzales called 'Worship' which feels like an old time gospel tune but with themes of examining a partner's self-deprecation. As the song progresses strings creates avant-tendencies before a plunging piano brings a nautical edge. 'My Heartbeats can be your silver lining' wins best lyrics on the album for me as it is such a pure and almost naive lyric that creates some resonance.
This album is for people who aren't afraid to experience a little emotionally intense with dark shades coloured in with charcoal. Brun has created something that answers some questions music never tends to ask and can emphasise the uncomfortable ideas and expressions we may harbour, but with such unequivocal beauty.
