Mike Sparks skateboards up to me, shakes my hand and smiles, while Scott Peters smiles widely and puts out his hand. Two lads from Canterbury, both extremely happy to be on tour with The Blackout, sit down for a chat.
Can you give me 4 words to describe Canterbury?
Mike Sparks: Sweet Rock music every day? Yeah! There you go.
Scott Peters: [laughs]
How would you describe you music to new fans... to people who have never heard you before?
Mike: Well we're a rock band. A sweet rock band.
Scott: Er, yeah, we call ourselves sweet rock.
Mike: But thats not a real thing! Kinda like, I mean we play pop songs, we're a rock band...
Kinda hard to describe.
Mike: Yeah, kinda hard to describe!
You toured with The Blackout last year, did you stay friends and that's why you got this tour?
Mike: Er yeah, I think. We haven't really seen them much since. We toured with them in December, then January, then we got a call for this.
Scott: Yeah, they're really cool people, we know them very well.
Your headline tour has just been announced. Are you excited for it?
Scott: Yeah! Well, quite nervous, cos it will be a year and 3 or 4 months when it actually happens since our last tour! But that went really well, the one before. We're doing our biggest shows.
Mike: We are doing our biggest headline tour.
So you're ready to conquer?
Mike: Yes, definately ready to conquer! Hope it goes really well! Like on our headline shows we get to play to people who we don't normally play to and it'll be so much more fun!
Which shows on this tour are you most excited about? And your headline tour?
Mike: On this tour, London in particular.
Scott: Yeah, London will be great. I think the venue in London is gonna be amazing. I mean The Roundhouse is just one of those places. Um, Leeds is always really nice to us and Scotland is always good! Erm yeah, we're looking forward to playing all. We've never played Lincoln before. We've played one show in Hull, but there were only about 3 people there...
Mike: It was horrible!
Scott: Yeah, that doesn't really count! It was a really small clubnight. But, yeah, we've never played Hull before. [Laughs] So we're excited to play there, just cos it'll be good to play places we've never played before.
Mike: And on headline, Dublin will be cool.
Scott: Yeah, Dublin will be top.
Mike: Ireland is always good! London is good. Manchester! We've never had a headline in Manchester! So i'm pretty sure that's gonna be a good show!
Scott: And Scotland!
Mike: Yeah, Scotland. And for this tour too, Manchester crowd should be good.
On the last tour the Manchester crowd was mental! Crazy!
Mike: Yeah?! We're very excited to play! And Portsmouth, cos it's close to home.
What's coming up next for Canterbury?
Scott: Europe. We're goin' Europe. Completely, 100% finished our new record. It's now hanging on 0.1% finished, but erm, yeah, we're going to Europe with You Me At Six in December. Five or six dates in Germany and Belgium. So that'll be really cool!
Mike: And then we're putting out our new single in the new year, so we gotta get to work on the new video!
Scott: And then people might start see us touring in the new year, maybe.
Mike: Maybe, maybe not....
So when it gets to NYE 2011, and you're looking back at the year, what will your highlights have been?
Scott: We've done so little in this year!
Mike: Touring-wise, we haven't done a lot!
Scott: No. Well, recording an album was amazing. YMAS dates [last year] were all amazing!
Mike: I reckon our first show was the rescheduled Christmas dates? [The dates should've have been December with other YMAS dates, but
were rescheduled for January, due to bad weather]
Scott: It was! So YMAS dates were really cool.
Mike: Redfest - our only UK festival - was really amazing. Recording the album.
Scott: Maybe at some point, this tour?
Mike: Yeah! Touring with friends is something we've done ever since we were a band, so it's something really great on this tour. [Laughs]
Thank you very much!
