By The Hubbards
'Bedbugs' is the new single release from Hull and Leeds-based Indie rockers, The Hubbards. The band have been making waves of late, having scored a support slot with fellow Yorkshire men, The Pigeon Detectives, and gaining Radio 1 airplay courtesy of Fearne Cotton. Such success is not a surprise given The Hubbards' sound, which seems to be an amalgamation of almost every successful indie group in the last couple of years: a touch of Bombay Bicycle Club here, some Two Door Cinema Club there, the band also references other Yorkshire-based acts like Arctic Monkeys and, to a lesser extent, Milburn. This is not necessarily a disadvantage as The Hubbards' amalgamation of influences ultimately seems to form a sound which is genuinely modern and current without wearing any singular influence too clearly on their rolled-up denim sleeves. Similarly, vocalist Reuben's lyrics aren't exactly impenetrable; bouncing along to an insanely catchy bass line, the vocalist bares all singing, 'I can't wait to fall asleep, 'cos I'll be dreaming of you'. However, such simplicity and naivety works wonders coupled with the youthful exuberance of The Hubbards' sound. The dirty production adds some indie cred to proceedings whilst also hinting at a fantastic live experience without seeming overproduced. Therefore, whilst The Hubbards aren't going to reinvent the wheel, they certainly know how to spin it, and on the strength of 'Bedbugs' the future is clearly bright for the quartet.
