By The Hickey Underworld
The Hickey Underworld are a four-piece alt-rock band from Antwerp, Belgium, and from the press release that came with this single, 'The Frog', I was pretty excited- on paper, it sounded as if this single would be quirky, dynamic, and unpredictable. I've been searching hard for something really thrilling in this song to tell you about, and as a radio-friendly alternative rock tune, it's totally palatable, but from the press release, I was eagerly anticipating something crazy. However, I am going to appreciate it for what I hear it as instead.
Having also listened to quite a few of their other songs and watched a few of their videos, they are definitely interesting and a very entertaining live band. They are producing great stuff, such as 'Mystery Bruise'- the singer has a great vocal range that isn't shown off to its full potential in 'The Frog', but there are some tingling moments of exciting vocals leading up to the chorus when I thought yes, this band are much more than radio-friendly, actually. I felt that their style hovers between noises like The Hives, Kaiser Chiefs and Kasabian, but with an added kick of excitement and unpredictability in places. This band have a lot more to offer than 'The Frog', for sure, which is more toned down than their other offerings. Definitely one to check out.
