By Lifetime Skiver
'Binoculars' is the long awaited debut album from Darlington based rockers, Lifetime Skiver. Quite in fitting with the band's name, the album has been in the making for 18 years, which has to be some kind of world record? The outfit have enjoyed some well-deserved public attention recently with the BBC Radio describing the release as "incredibly enjoyable."
Starting out in 1994, forged from the remnants of Darlington band Palitoy, Lifetime Skiver have built up quite a local following over their 18 years together through playing at local venues and prestigious national venues alike. The band has certainly employed the old fashioned approach to music; hard graft and constant gigging, as opposed to the modern day dream of simply breaking into fame. This authentic approach and a retro sound makes The Skivers a blast from the past, and a refreshing one at that.
They have an unmistakably British sound, and you can hear definite influences taken from classic English songwriters such as The Kinks, Blur and The Beatles. 'Binoculars' absolutely screams 60s and it feels like listening to much loved classics, at times you would have no idea that it's the debut of a modern group! I particularly enjoyed the tracks 'Every Day's A Good Day' and 'Son', but all songs on the album display top notch songwriting skills and are catchy and intriguing in equal amounts. Admittedly, the Skivers aren't doing much that hasn't been done before but it's a tried and tested formula which yields instant appeal. The slightly lo-fi sounding production is at times very effective for pulling off the 60s vibe, but it's less effective when it comes to some of the more synth-heavy songs on the album which at times sounds a little dated...
However, the album is guaranteed to dredge up old memories and to be enjoyed by the young and the old. It's a very purposeful, complete release from experienced musicians, and 'Binoculars' is well worth a listen.
