Preview of Andy McKee's City Varieties Gig
Way back in 2007 Andy McKee was described as "a competent guitarist and a perfect warm up artist". Oh, how things have changed. McKee is now recognised as one of the world's finest acoustic guitar soloists, is a YouTube sensation, and has shared a stage with renowned guitarists Prince and Tommy Emmanuel.
This time, he's going solo; embarking on a sixteen-date tour that takes him from London all the way up to Kendal and back down to London again with stops along the way including Manchester, Cardiff, and Birmingham.
American McKee is no stranger to the UK having been a central performer in the sell-out Guitar Masters UK tour of 2012 which was hailed as "an entertaining and eclectic night showcasing some of the most adept guitar playing you are likely to hear."
Whether performing from his own repertoire of six solo albums, or covering songs by Toto and Tears for Fears, his playing is both a sight and sound to behold. McKee's performance style is very similar to the aforementioned Emmanuel with infused sounds of jazz, bluegrass and Americana - in his hands the guitar is not just a guitar but a drum and much more besides.
McKee hits Leeds for a gig at the City Varieties on Thursday, March 20.
