In the last of our StrangeForms band interviews we caught up with Matt from festival openers, Sunw°lf...
*StrangeForms Festival takes place over the Easter Bank Holiday (19th & 20th April) at Wharf Chambers and features sixteen post-rock, post-metal and math rock acts.*
BAD OWL PRESENTS: Sunw°lf will be the very first act to play the very first StrangeForms event. It was important for us to have a Leeds band open proceedings - are you feeling the pressure or are you looking forward to it?
MATT: We're really looking forward to it, we're on super early, but I think we'll play extra loud to wake the neighbours up. It also allows us plenty of time for a few shandy's afterwards...which is always nice.
BOP: You released two albums within seven months of each other (2012's Beyond The Sun and 2013's Midnight Moon) and you have another album due out soon - is it important for you to get all your ideas down and recorded and available to fans quickly and will you be continuing with the 'astral' theme on album number III?
M: I wouldn't say it's important for us to release music quickly; we put out the first two records in quick succession because we had a lot of 'archived' material so to speak. We develop sounds and ideas fairly quickly and just don't feel the need to adhere to the archaic two-year album cycle...sure, that's applicable to bigger bands, but not us.
The third record is a departure from our previous releases, both visually and sonically. Perhaps we should have stuck to the program to create a conceptual trilogy, but that would be all too easy...and predictable.
BOP: You will be moving to Aberdeen soon, with Dom remaining in Leeds - how do you see this affecting the band?
M: We'll be playing fewer shows but will continue to make music much in the same way as we do now.
BOP: Sunw°lf will be playing on the Saturday at StrangeForms - are you planning on sticking around for the day or weekend and, if so, who are you looking forward to seeing?
M: We'll be there for the majority of the weekend. I'm really looking forward to seeing Latitudes, fantastic band! Also pretty keen to see Himself, Monster Killed by Laser as well as our dudes, Envoys.
BOP: Sunw°lf are asked to curate their own gig - what four bands, past or present, would you have on the bill?
BOP: And finally, other than StrangeForms, what are Sunw°lf's plans for the rest of 2014?
M: We're just focusing on the new album...which should be out in June/July. We've been working on it pretty solidly for the past 4 months. We've got a handful of shows left also, but it'll be a quiet summer for us whilst I'm relocating to Scotland.
Sunw°lf are set to open StrangeForms at 3pm on Saturday 19th April.
