Whilst his name and talent are well recognised, his persona remains a mystery. Rob wants only to be recognised through his words and music, his means of expression. In the current 'pop idol' culture Rob can truly be described as an enigma. In an industry where many are trying to fabricate 'different', Rob simply is. Thus his stage show is not only different but unpredictably so; even he doesn't always know where it's going.

After three albums and countless stage perfotmances Rob is still on a mission to share his music with anybody prepared to listen. He has no pretensions and is as happy performing to the proverbial one man and his dog as he is to a huge audience, provided that he is listened to and feels that feedback.

Country Rock? Blues Rock? Country-Blues Rock? Dylanesque? Grant Lee Philips? Early Bowie? Ray Davies? Rob can't answer that, he's just himself.

Only those fortunate enough to see him live can respond to that question and even then it may not be the answer.

I don't think there's any contest. For songwriting sensitivity and performance, nobody else comes close. Lewes, Reservoir Street, Welsh Avenue, 13th lullaby, Evil, is anybody else out there writing stuff like this? Or even a quarter as good?

You're right on all counts - songwriting isn't a contest. Rob is very good indeed and those songs are among my favourites. In teh Leeds area there are some other very good writers - James Fewtrell is not well known, but has some fabulous songs. Nick Hall (see recent review) is very accomplished too. Johnny Berliner and the Bilderberg Group, Last Night's TV and Instant Species - oh and Scaramnaga Six and Dave Cooke - all have very high songwriing standards. Lots more as well I'm sure.
