"It's getting late
Let's hit the town
Call some friends
To paint it red"
The Levellers' friends in this case are folkies of the moment, Bellowhead.
This new version of 'Just The One', released on 24th November, is taken from the band's recently released Greatest Hits; a best-of that highlights what they think are the most creative and musically accomplished pieces from their own back catalogue.
'Just The One' first appeared in 1995 as a single on the No 1 Chart album Zeitgest. Back then, Joe Strummer was in the guest slot, tinkling the ivories on the piano. Now it's the horns, fiddles, drums and vocals of Sartin, Sweeney and Kirkpatrick et al who bring their own inimitable style to this single.
Slowed down, but simultaneously jazzed up, the staccato nature of the song's short lyrics fits perfectly with Jon Boden's delivery style for a riotous three-minute-thirty-six-seconds collaboration. The visual result of this arrangement can be seen online below.
