Dancing Years at The Brudenell Social Club - December 16th 2014
This headline gig is a bit of a homecoming for these five local Leeds chaps and the word on the street is, that they are returning off the back of an extremely successful European tour! Having kept my eye on this band for a while I am now really looking forward to the opportunity to see what they can do live... and with the added "back-garden" feel about the gig it already has a certain buzz about it. To add to that they have also now completed their first headline UK tour, filling St Pancras Old Church in London with a sold out and extremely impressed crowd. So who are these five who come a-knocking on their own back door at The Brudenell next Tuesday evening?
David Henshaw is the vocalist in a beautifully crafted band that seems to magnetise to a really good tune without "over-egging" a single song that I've heard so far. David's vocals are exceptional and have a David Gray flavour with a pinch of Damien Rice thrown into his own unique sound. Joseph Lawrenson features on particularly pretty piano parts and Dan Fielding tempers the melodies with mature and delicate electric guitar. Dominic Butler adds a sumptuous violin which is all backed up by a very musical and tasteful drummer in Joe Montague. The mix is definitely working.
Strong songs which shine are hard to plonk in your armoury and Dancing Years have managed to do just that. They have a likeable demeanour and don't take themselves too seriously, whilst maintaining attention to detail and allow the songs to do the work for them. In a live situation this really works and you can see that from the videos on their website. This has fast turned into a MUST SEE GIG for me, and that's not even considering the great support they've managed to line up!
The Bronze Medal are a perfect fit for this gig and should set the scene extremely well for the headliners. We're talking more amazing melancholic melodies and gorgeous guitar lines. This band featured on the BBC Introducing Stage at Reading to rave reviews! What's not to get excited about!? I don't know about you.. but I can't wait!
