Stewart from Bad Owl Presents had a chat with Alright The Captain guitarist, Marty, in the lead up to their performance at StrangeForms.
BAD OWL PRESENTS: Alright The Captain have just released their second LP 'Contact Fix' (which is a corker!) - can you tell us a bit about the recording process and the background/story of the album?
ALRIGHT THE CAPTAIN: Cheers guys, We tend to play a lot of shows so it took us a while to actually write all the songs for Contact Fix and find the time to get the album recorded. One thing that definitely worked to our advantage was that we had all the songs locked down so when it came around to recording them at Snug it was a breeze. Jamie actually nailed all his drum takes first go for every track. There's not really a story behind the albums but all our song names are generally named after little things which happen in our lives or on tour.
BOP: You seem to have been on tour forever and obviously enjoy spending time on the road. What have been the highlights of the current tour?
ATC: The Macbeth in London recently was an awesome show as was Bar Bloc in Glasgow with Envoys. It was also a real pleasure meeting and touring with Bellow Below.
BOP: You've been an integral part of the DIY music scene both as a band and as a promoter for several years now (Marty puts on monthly nights in Derby and Nottingham under the name ButtonPusher) but it seems that Alright The Captain have been getting a bit more deserved recognition over the past few months. Do you put this down to the latest LP and incessant touring or something more?
ATC: We've just been constantly pushing ourselves as hard as we can over the past few years and I think the new record has really helped. It's definitely the happiest we've ever been with any of our recorded output so it's really cool that people are enjoying it and that just drives us to play even more shows.
BOP: Alright The Captain will be playing on the Saturday at StrangeForms - are you planning on sticking around for the day or weekend and, if so, who are you looking forward to seeing?
ATC: We'll be sticking around for the whole weekend I think and really looking forward to seeing Trojan Horse and Worriedaboutsatan as it's been ages since we've seen either live. It'll be nice to catch up with our buddies Kusanagi and Fly On Byrd, Fly On too.
BOP: Alright The Captain are asked to curate their own gig - what four bands, past or present, would you have on the bill?
ATC: Giraffes? Giraffes!, Nirvana, Death Grips and ASIWYFA would be a pretty spectacular lineup
BOP: And finally, other than StrangeForms, what are Alright The Captain's plans for the rest of 2015?
ATC: We're doing quite a few UK and Mainland European shows up until May then we're gonna spend a little time concentrating on writing some new music followed by a few more UK shows before we play Rodeofest and ArcTanGent. Hopefully a few more festivals too but we'll keep our fingers crossed for that in the meantime.
Alright The Captain will be playing StrangeForms at 9pm on Saturday 4th of April.
