By The Belles
The Belles are Christopher Tolle and Jake Cardwell from Kansas, a singer/guitarist and a drummer/percussionist. The thing that strikes me about this album most is the drum sound. Maybe that's cos I'm a geek, but maybe not, it's not something I usually listen for when I stick a CD in the tray, it's just here I noticed it as it's really rather good. There are so many artists doing the acoustic singer/songwriter thing at the moment that it can get a little boring and it's hard to stand out from the crowd. One thing that helps is a good vocal of course and luckily for The Belles, Mr Tolle has one. He reminds me of Jakob Dylan at times, just a slight husk to the tone sometimes. The tunes themselves are very pleasant, the title track being my particular favourite. There are flourishes of piano, lap steel and even some programming to spice things up and add a little colour to proceedings too. Not as dull as Coldplay and just plain better than David Gray or Turin Brakes there's much to recommend about this offering. If the acoustic genre is your bag then you could do far worse than to give this a try.
