Don't forget that Josh Homme and Nick Olivera helped write the album
By Auf Der Maur
I was really dubious about this album at first, I mean, just how many singing frontman (or woman) bassists do you know? Plus lets not forget, Melissa Auf der Maur was in Hole, then Smashing Pumpkins - a pretty hard act to follow.
But this album does not disappoint. It's astounding. The first track, "Lightning Is My Girl", sets the mood for the rest of the album. Rich layers of sound, melodic vocals and a fast pace. Followed the Waves, one of the singles, really creates a mood. The bit where she sings "Followed the waves to you" reminds me of the sea crashing on a beach.
Not all the songs are love related however. "I'll Be Anything You Want" is a light hearted song about dancing while "Would If I Could" is a light and refreshing track reminiscent of soulful sixties girl groups. The intro to "Skin Receiver" begins with the sound of horses galloping, pretty daring, it could have sounded dire but again, it's another great track.
This album shows Melissa Auf der Maur to be a strong, talented story teller in her own right without having to Courtney style controversy to raise her profile. I guess working with James Iha and Eric Erlandson didnt do any harm either, but where's Billy Corgan might I ask?
