This is an archive of the band profile for If I Were King.

If I Were King are a six-piece group hailing from Halifax and Huddersfield who formed in 2004. Radio One recently commented that the band ‘combine three-part vocal harmonies, dynamic guitars, keyboards, violin, bass and drums to create intriguing pop sensibilities’.

The first months of 2005 saw the band locked away with former Cure engineer Steve Whitfield, laying down tracks at Huddersfield’s HD1 Studio.

The demo from these sessions is causing a major stir in the industry and has already notched up play on Radio One, London’s influential XFM and even Stateside by WKQX FM in Chicago. The track ‘Cauterise’ was played by DJ Huw Stephens on Radio One. The same song was spun on XFM’s ‘Xposure’ show by respected DJ and MTV presenter Claire Sturgess. Another If I Were King tune ‘Restless’ was also recently aired on XFM.

The band’s sound and reputation is burgeoning in 2005. They were featured in the June issue of The Fly magazine, listed in the ‘Ones to Watch’ feature for up and coming new groups. The Yorkshire Post picked up on the group’s buzz, featuring If I Were King in their ‘Have You Heard About?’ section alongside celebrated New Yorkers Ambulance Ltd.

If I Were King recently played two Club Fandango shows in Manchester and London, the prestigious showcase night affiliated to Fierce Panda records (the legendary label which discovered, amongst others, Super Furry Animals, Placebo, Idlewild, Coldplay, Embrace, The Music and Keane).

If I Were King have also been chosen to play the Leeds leg of the Lee Sounds Unsigned Tour, a showcase for the finest unsigned talent in the UK and Ireland, judged by NME and Radio One. Only four groups will feature from the whole of Yorkshire and the Northeast..
