The Good Ones

By The Kills

Raw, loud and unrestrained, the latest offering from the boy/girl blues trash outfit is the epitome of nicotine-stained scuzzy rock 'n' roll. Female vocalist VV dominates throughout, providing yet another fine example of oestrogen fuelled rage and passion, which, quite frankly, seems to be kicking the average male rocker's ass at the moment. Early PJ Harvey comparisons flow quick and fast and it is clear to hear why as she snarls her way through three minutes of intense defiance. Hotel, meanwhile, shares the vocals, yet is much quieter, providing a raspy backdrop for VV. Just as vital to the song's success though, he is responsible also for the continuous fuzz of the nagging guitar riff that persistently drives the melody.

Adapted from a Kills diary entry, 'The Good Ones' is said to catalogue the craving for and consequent desperate pursuit of that elusive good time. Both thrilling and unsettling I think it manages to do this just perfectly. Though it may set itself up for accusations of repetition, with the incessant beat from the drum machine and the cyclic chorus, "Did you get the real good ones? Did you get the good ones? Did you get the real good ones? Did you get the good ones?", it is definitely more a case of it being catchy than boring and represents the constant, ruthless chase for kicks. Giving a nod to late 70s New York, 'The Good Ones' accumulates hedonism and excess. It is rock 'n' roll stripped down to its barest and it doesn't half sound good. 'The Good Ones' is erotically charged throughout; dirty and distorted, there is no escaping its sleaze and I dare you to listen to it and not feel that you are a part of something truly filthy.

The first single to be taken from the forthcoming second album, 'No Wow', 'The Good Ones' has already highlighted that 2005 could be, or indeed should be, the year in which The Kills do, in fact, wow us. Calling in at The Cockpit on February 1st, I strongly recommend that you get yourself down there and check these guys out. Just make sure you let me get my ticket first...
