Yorkshire Bone

Live at Mixing Tin on Tuesday, 26th April 2005

I get to the Mixo about 1 and a bit songs from the end of "unknown opener"'s set, so I can only comment as follows - it's a bit emo, a bit metal, a lot out of tune and a bit pretend standing still moshing at the front. Not in my eyes a good start. The acely named Menbrain employ shameless crowd participation from the word go and this is PROPER ROCK, like Guns'n'Roses, but from Guiseley. No 80's rock cliché is left undone, and the crowd goes berzerk. AAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRGGGGHHHHHH, it's Shot By Both Sides, employing 2 vocalists, 1 Slipknot/Extreme Noise Terror/Napalm Death/Slipknot, t'other a bit more System of a Down and Green Day. There are issues obviously being dealt with here amongst the big riffs and shouting, but it's hard to tell what these are. Potential, nonetheless. The crowd has thinned a bit for the headliners Yorkshire Bone, but by the time Tony Bone has bawled "Bone" into his mic 20 times, the remaining hardy souls are paying attention. The first track sounds like Kraftwerk at times. At times. Unusual as this is a big spacerocktechnoracketnoisefest. It's hypnotic, mobile strobes appear in and out of the smoke, and in the words of Tony, the future's fucked not orange. Slowly, incomprehension takes hold and some punters wander off, but did they expect an easy ride? Few bands around Leeds are doing their own take on music, and this is definitely 1 band that is. It's a big noise. A BIG NOISE. "That's the fire alarm" shouts Tony, as the smoke machine gets the better of the Mixing Tin, but it sounds like it should be part of the set. And then the plug's pulled. Chopped down in their prime. End.

Guns'n'Roses, come on. Why do people get away with this flippant throw away journalism. Menbrain sound nothing like the above band, none of us like the above band. A lot of people visit this website and I'm sure a lot of visitors take the reviews of band they have not seen before seriously, basing a judgement on the band & then will not go & see that band if they have read a bad review on this site.Fair enough, what are reviews for if not to provide one persons opinion. I can accept that but when the review is 4 lines long, doesn't mention anything about our songs other than to say we are full of 80s cliches.Come on, it's a cheap and easy thing to write which takes little skill and thought. I am a regular visitor to this site and enjoy many aspects of it but when we spend so much time and effort on our band why can one person dismiss us in 4 lines, therefore providing an impression to so many visitors to this site. Anyone can be a critic, everyone has an opinion, but when it's this throwaway and poorly done I just think please don't bother. Yes the crowd went beserk, because the people know what is good. I don't mind bad reviews as long as they are well done, not wrote in 20 seconds.

"I don't mind bad reviews" - you got a great review! Why did you think that was bad?

That's what was said, I read this to say you were good and the crowd loved you

"Yes the crowd went beserk, because the people know what is good." - Modest. To be fair to the Membrane guy, I know what he means: it's annoying to get comparisons that just aren't fair. But, mate, did you actually read the review other than that comparison? Don't be so accusational.

The review did not say they sounded like Guns n rhubarb - it said they "employ shameless crowd participation from the word go and this is PROPER ROCK, like Guns'n'Roses".

"Why do people get away with this flippant throw away journalism." -- Because they can use punctuation properly.
