By The Blood Arm
It would be of no surprise to you if I say that The Blood Arm happen to be Franz Ferdinand's new favourite band. As such you could quite easily add an American twang to FF vocalist Alex Kapranos' voice and this could feasibly be the new Franz release. Thankfully as luck would have it Franz Ferdinand are a great band and it's no disastrous thing to follow in their Gang Of Four for the 21st Century mould & LA's The Blood Arm pull it off perfectly and they've arrived just before the onslaught too. Three well-crafted indie dance ditties for you to enjoy in the club and on the radio alike. It's difficult to fault the formula as far as entertainment value goes.
Say Yes' stuttering piano start bursts into the genre's trademark spiky guitar shimmering. The tune floats and flies every which way - the guitar, bass, keyboard and whatever else they find around the studio twittering in and out at near random occasions, staging cameo appearances before scuttling away for a coffee (or whatever else keyboards do when not in use) The almost shambolic nature of the musicianship is very much refreshing but yet it's all united by the rousing chorus of a repeated 'Say Yes'.
"Do I Have Your Attention?" is arguably even better. More linear than the lead track but equally uplifting. The lyrics are very apt for where The Blood Arm find themselves right now. Self admitting in the conclusion that the answer is 'not yet, not yet, not yet'. Track 3 "Can I Unwind" is less striking but is by no means throwaway.
There's a huge possibility the indie press (naming no names) will be spewing their figurative load all over these guys (and gal) in a week or two. Success is inevitable for The Blood Arm but will they have the uniqueness to have your attention?
