Last years phenomenally titled "Racecar is Racecar Backwards" saw Farnborough three-piece Reuben show a strong knack for indulging in some rather melodious pop-rock shenanigans. All in all, 2004 wasn't a bad year for the trio; 12,000 sales of the aforementioned album, headlining the prestigious Mean Fiddler venue in London and a nomination for Best British Newcomer at the Kerrang! awards. Question is then, can Reuben build on this momentum and go onto bigger and better things?
On the basis of new single "A Kick In the Mouth" the answer isn't a resounding yes, but it isn't a definite rebuttal either - as a statement of intent, the single is more of an emphatic "meh" rather than anything else. The initial promise of an opening bassline that sounds as if it could shake Satan's bowels is never delivered, and instead we give a rather blandified Foo Fighters chorus and a song that bounds along nicely enough but pretty much lacks the essential chutzpah that would make it stand out from the current Brit Rock crowd. Not bad chaps, but you can do a lot better.
