Sorry Luke,
You're in a small minority with this one.
Fireapple Red are probably one of the most exciting new bands around right now.
Great Album - Great Band
By Fireapple Red
It's rare I listen to a CD and sense a lack of discernable musical talent but for some strange reason that's what struck me about "The First Drop". It may have become even more apparent due to the fact 3 of the tracks on this 6 track mini-album are live recordings, so 'tightness' probably wasn't of utmost priority. However this take on 'melodic hardcore' just does not entertain nor hold the listener's attention. It's a shame because when Fireapple Red do hit their pinnacle and it seems time has been spent developing and adding character to a song it is really good. The highlight - 'Another Season' sounds like an above average Boysetsfire or Strike Anywhere song, it's a really strong track but it stands alone in valiantly attempting to drag Fireapple Red out of the plummeting depths of mediocrity. The guitars are ridiculously repetitive, the drumming is reliable if nothing else and the vocals, or at least the lyrics, are barely audible 90% of the time. They're very similar to the US's Leftover Crack, so if you like them, you'll probably like this, but it's not going to blow the minds of even fans of the hardcore genre.
The idea of the 3 live tracks is a novel and great idea however, just a shame the songs aren't up to much, they all sound like Deathbystereo having a bad day. For fans only perhaps. I sensed a lack of ingenuity and ability, but that's coming from someone who can just about play 'Smoke On The Water'. Refused, ATD-I, Fugazi - these are the bands that built melodic hardcore and were experts in the field and they're all gulfs better than Fireapple Red on the basis of "The First Drop".

Do you work for Fireapple Red?
They still don't tickle my fancy and I like most of their contempories. Just because they're somewhat of a semi media darling band doesn't mean I agree.
