Middle Of Nowhere

By Hot Hot Heat

The most understated Hot Hot Heat release yet this definitely is. This is light-years away from the superb 'Bandages' of a few years back. As far as many are concerned Hot Hot Heat probably disappeared off the planet following the completion of 'Make Up The Breakdown' duties but contrary to popular belief sophomore album 'Elevator' does exist and it's a very nice piece of work indeed. So much more mature than the cheap thrills and fun and frolics of the 'Heats debut, it still contains plenty of the life and get up and go of 'Make Up The Breakdown' but as 'Middle Of Nowhere' indicates the writing process has progressed enormously, how else could a song as sweet as this been created? The familiar keyboards bring in the laidback guitars as tales of being 'Consistently inconsistent' chirp over the top in Steve Bays unique high helium induced voice. It's actually one of the least single friendly tracks on 'Elevator' and probably wasn't the best choice but nevertheless, it might be time for people to take Hot Hot Heat seriously. 'Middle Of Nowhere' just about has the hooks and charms of previous 'Heat singles while showing maturity. Don't count these Canadians out yet.
