My Demise

By Engerica

After years of hovering just below the radar, it's finally time for Engerica to rise kicking and screaming to centre stage, brilliant. Unbelievably, Engerica were on the bill of the first live show I ever witnessed, supporting Reuben at the Kasbah in ever so glamorous Scarborough many years ago. They showed a great deal of potential then, but failed to capitalize on any early momentum and slipped down the hypothetical pecking order of UK rock bands waiting for their shot. It was no doubt an unfortunate and frustrating delay but as recent stirling performances with Million Dead and (cough) Sum41 proved Engerica have honed their playing and writing talents and the 'My Demise' single is the result. A ludicrously full tilt blast through some kind of schizophrenic breakdown of charismatic/odd vocalist David Gardner. Despite swaying and veering all over the place the pace never drops, with the ritual drums underlying no strict guitar line and 'My Demise' would sit well on anyone's MP3 playlist if not a mainstay in the CD player. Totalling in at a meagre 1:54 however, it's all about the cheap thrills rather than trying to achieve a total musical nirvana.

Delightfully titled B-Side 'Arsehole' is on the same musical lines. After all a song with the chorus 'I look like an arsehole' is never going to fail is it? This track adds further evidence to the accusation Gardner is a little 'out there' when it comes to his lyrical meanderings (can you imagine Bono singing this?) but interesting nevertheless. It's tongue in cheek taken a little too far perhaps.

If Engerica are ever to make it, it will be based on the success of their imminent long awaited debut, not this. 'My Demise' is like the opening blast of the cannon signalling a pending embarkation of your figurative pirate ship. Gardner's lyrics may even grow so abstract they garner somewhat of a cult following, but that being so, Engerica's songs can easily speak for themselves.

Bizarrely, 'My Demise' was also released about 18 months ago as the B-Side to 'Trick or Treat' on Wrath Records. We've still got a few copies left if anyone is interested...
