Work, Work, Work (Pub, Club, Sleep)
By The Rakes
The Rakes sound like a million different bands, they talk about the same ambiguous subject matter as a million others but yet The Rakes do seem to hold a very special concentration of charm to single them out for extra attention. The most obvious comparisons at the moment lie in Maximo Park or The Others but also show signs of Pulp at their best or in some respects blandness of The Thrills variety. A different band springs to mind upon every play. The lyrics, although not groundbreaking are down to earth and naturally easy to relate to. The title 'Work, Work, Work, Pub, Club, Sleep' summing up and symbolising this ongoing and still increasing trend for depicting the apparent hum drum lives of these down heartened indie rock n rollers. The Rakes seem well capable of slipping, near subliminally, into the current market with tunes as charming and listenable as this.
