By Paul Weller
A strange record this. There's a sort of lilting rural tune to it, but some almost clumsy chord changes going on underneath and an over-hit acoustic guitar (what is with big stars making expensive Gibsons sound like Yamaha beginner guitars?). Weller presses his soulboy voice out into space without any obvious provocation,. the song loses its sense of direction and it all ends in Pete Townshend gutsy guitar thrashing. Which is what Paul Weller always did do best. I expect his fans understand what it's about. And I really don't mind him doing this on my stereo. It's short and sweet and unpretentious.
