By Jesse Malin
Uncut's current flavour of the months introduces himself to the world with the opening track off of debut album 'The Fine Art Of Self Destruction'. Evoking memories of The Ramones with it's pop sensibilities and almost motown sounding guitar in the verses before breaking into it's chorus with Malin's nasal "Queen Of The Underworld refrain " answered by Melissa Auf De Mer's floaty "don't turn around" answer. The descending piano becomes a motif in the chorus whilst merely providing a supporting roll in the verse where the guitar really grabs at you.
Lyrically Malin comes across all Springsteen all "tilter whirls" and towns called "Resume Speed". His vocal is the kind that you'll either hate and it will put you off completely or that you find yourself becoming more comfortable with each listen as it captures the emotion of the lyrics and provides a counterpoint to the smoothness of the melody.
No need to mention his mate any more.
