By Less Than Jake
Over 10 years since their first gig, this is Florida Ska Punkers Less Than Jake's sixth album and things are changing on 'Anthem'. You still will sing along to the songs, they'll still make you smile and they'll still be stuck in your head for weeks to come but with a subdued horn section a rockier sound and songs titled 'The brightest bulb has burnt out' and 'The ghosts of me and you' this may not sound like typical Less Than Jake. The opening line "Welcome home outcasts" seems to set the tone for the rest of the album. From the heavily reggae 'The science of selling yourself short', the high speed riffs and heavy drumming on 'Escape from the a-bomb house' and the unmistakeable pop punk of current single 'She's gonna break soon', which has all the hallmarks of a cross over single, the music seems to almost disguise the lyrics about burning out, drowning sorrows in drink and drugs and families falling apart. 'Anthem' also includes a re-recorded version of 'Look what happened' from predecessor 'Borders and Boundaries' (2000). This is a definite progression for a band who were in danger of entering the world of predictability and strongly affirms that Less Than Jake are still a force to be reckoned with and will be around for a long time yet.
Catch 22 is an American ska punk band from East Brunswick Township, New Jersey.
