Happy As Annie / On Sussex Downs

By Larrikin Love

Somehow, somewhere, you can just imagine Pete Doherty in his little hat bobbing along to Larrikin Love. Take four London boys, throw in Edward Larrikin and no more than four chords, and you have Larrikin Love.

'Happy As Annie' is a bouncy, chirpy start, but sounds so much like Babyshambles, Libertines, 10,000 Things, etc. that it just falls flat on its face. It's been done, and about a million times before.

'On Sussex Downs' fairs not much better, as it's exactly the same as pretty much every indie, 4-chord, shambolic, we-get-drunk-every-night-and fight-bouncers-in-trendy-clubs kind of way. Christ, just what we needed, another indie band.

This irritates me. Larrikin's last single, the rather fantastic 'Six Queens' was an excellent slice of sinister wonder, but this CD just highlights a band trying so desperately to jump on the bandwagon of NME-approved indie bollocks.
