History is my first experience of Funeral for a Friend, with my pre conceived impression expecting a combination of rock, pop and metal. Well, the Welsh quintet chose to mellow out and go acoustic on this instantly likeable crack at the mainstream market.

The CD cover and video are based around the heartrending effects of the miners' strikes in the mid eighties. These troubled times hit some of the bands family members and the single History (a song about triumph over adversity and standing up for what you believe in) ties in with those events.

The song itself stands up in its own right as a melodic, well constructed and increasingly endearing piece of music. The chorus, accompanied with strings and catchy vocals, eats away at your subconscious until you submit and start humming it while doing the washing up; and once it has control of you it is worse to shake off than a piece of chewing gum on your favourite pants.

This offering demands respect, and will no doubt increase the band's growing fanbase. The mellow side of the band is to be admired, whether the harder side measures up remains to be seen.

FFAF are actually excellent live. I was forced into seeing them at Leeds 04 and was mightily impressed.
