By Simple Kid
Very rough and raw sounding (we even get a little laugh left in the vocal track) this a Dylan-esque little ditty that's verses are stronger than it's chorus. Simple Kid has a rather average voice but it serves the purpose here and is part of the single's charm. Some bluesy harmonica adds to the rootsy feel and after the third chorus "Go go the Average Man" starts becoming quite catchy. The doubled acoustic and electric guitars staccato rhythm give the song a pace that lends extra legs to a decent song. B-side "Maybe I'm Just Cynical... Man" is actually a better song than the single, a folksy blues tune with a floay flute melody. Lyrically it's bound to court controversy though: "Well I tried not to laugh when Diana was halved cos it don't make no difference to me". Sometimes is good not to play too safe though and it comes across more like a brutally honest statement rather than something written purely to cause a stir. Worth further investigation on the strength of track 3.
