Think of Mogwai and your first thought is probably of white noise loving, Kappa tracksuit wearing Glaswegian Sabbath fans trying to deafen everyone in sight. So then listening to the latest single "Friend of The Night" those not that familiar with the Mogwai of late might be surprised to hear a rather different side to this outfit.
The past few albums "Rock Action" and 2003's "Happy Songs For Happy People" have seen the band gradually move away from the quiet/loud formula that brought them notoriety in the mid/late 90's and have opted for quieter and more complex arrangements. This single carries on the good work of the past few years and is a gorgeous piano led instrumental that will instantly appeal to the majority of already die hard fans. In truth this song could have slotted very easily onto either of the past two Mogwai albums so a dramatic progression this is not.
With the release of the new LP "Mr Beast" due in March "Friend of the Night" is a decent taster of what will be on offer with hopefully a few more surprises in the bag come the album.
